Safeguarding

What is safeguarding?

It is a set of policies and procedures to ensure that students aged under 18 are always kept safe and out of harm.

In the UK, safeguarding includes:

DBS: This is a system where all adults who have contact with children undergo a criminal background check.

Staff ratios: Every activity is assessed to ensure that there is enough adult supervision to guarantee the safety of the children which may vary according to the age of the students.

Risk assessments: All aspects of our junior programmes undergo an annual health and safety check. We look at all aspects of our courses including the buildings, outside space, fire procedures, safety and the way their activities and trips are organised and run, unsupervised out of class time, external venues attended by their students etc.

Policies: BLC International has its own carefully devised guidelines which parents can access here and are welcome to ask to see these if they are wish on site or via email.

Training: BLC International regularly trains our staff with regards to safeguarding and health & safety to ensure safety and best practice.

E-Safety: Under British law all organisations working with children must have filters to protect children from inappropriate online material and teach students what to do if they are worried about the content or online requests.

How to contact the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

Jamie Gray jamie@brightonlc.co.uk is our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) at Brighton Language College International.

The role of the DSL was specified in the Children Act 2004. Our DSL has a responsibility at both a strategic level within the organisation and on a day to day basis.  All students are introduced to Jamie on Day 1 and given contact details when booking the course.  All staff and homestay providers also have this information.
